The southwest side is inside Bakersfield city limits, so the Bakersfield Police Department patrols it. The department runs a West Side Substation at 1301 Buena Vista Road that serves the western and southwestern parts of the city — the growth areas out toward Stockdale, Gosford, and Old River Road. That substation is where a lot of local patrol activity is based.

Here’s the part that surprises families, though: the substation is not where your loved one is held. No matter where in the city the arrest happens, booking is centralized downtown at the Central Receiving Facility at 1415 Truxtun Avenue. From there, people who aren’t released quickly are usually transferred to the Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility north of town. So even a Stockdale-area arrest ends up downtown — a 15-to-20-minute drive east of most southwest neighborhoods.
