This is the one thing worth understanding about the northwest side: jurisdiction is mixed. The parts of the northwest that were annexed into the city — much of Riverlakes and the newer subdivisions — are patrolled by the Bakersfield Police Department. But large stretches of Rosedale and Fruitvale remain unincorporated, which means they’re patrolled by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office instead.

For a family, the good news is that this distinction doesn’t change what you do next. Whether the arrest is made by city police or the Sheriff, your loved one is booked at the same place: the Central Receiving Facility at 1415 Truxtun Avenue downtown, then typically transferred to the Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility. The county jail system serves both agencies, so the path home is the same.
